Contemporary architecture has been profoundly shaped by the relentless pursuit of spatial fluidity, natural light, and seamless integration between interior and exterior environments. In this context, minimalist window and door systems have evolved from a purely aesthetic option into high-performance technical solutions capable of meeting the demanding requirements of architects, engineers, and construction professionals. Technological advances in materials — particularly thermally broken aluminium systems — have enabled the development of extremely slim profiles without compromising structural integrity, energy efficiency, or acoustic comfort.
Minimalist glazing systems are characterised by the substantial reduction of the visible thickness of supporting profiles, prioritising large glazed surfaces. Unlike conventional systems, where the aluminium frame plays a dominant visual role, minimalist systems frequently conceal the frame within walls, floors, and ceilings, leaving only a central visible profile that can be as slim as 20 mm.
This technical approach is based on the principle that the glass itself assumes the primary structural function, supporting wind loads and the system’s own weight, while the aluminium profile acts mainly as a connection and sealing element. Advanced systems from leading manufacturers allow the construction of large sliding doors with heights exceeding 3.5 metres and supporting weights of up to 750 kg per sash.
THERMAL PERFORMANCE AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Modern minimalist systems achieve high levels of energy efficiency through the integration of thermally broken aluminium profiles and the use of high-performance double or triple glazing with solar control and low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings. The thermal break — typically composed of glass fibre reinforced polyamide — interrupts the natural conductivity of aluminium, significantly reducing heat transfer between the interior and exterior.
State-of-the-art systems can achieve Uw values below 1.0 W/(m²·K), meeting and surpassing the stringent requirements of building energy performance regulations (such as Portugal’s REH) and often obtaining Passivhaus certification for high-efficiency projects.
ACOUSTIC INSULATION AND WEATHER TIGHTNESS
In addition to thermal performance, acoustic comfort is a critical parameter, particularly in urban environments. A window’s ability to reduce external noise is measured by the sound reduction index (Rw), expressed in decibels (dB).
Despite the reduced profile thickness, minimalist systems provide exceptional acoustic insulation, achieving Rw values exceeding 40 dB. This performance is obtained through the combination of acoustic laminated glass (incorporating acoustic PVB interlayers) and advanced perimeter sealing systems using highly elastic and durable EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) gaskets. These components ensure perfect compression and eliminate gaps through which sound could propagate.
Regarding water tightness and air permeability, minimalist sliding systems incorporate concealed drainage channels and complex sealing solutions. These features enable them to achieve top classifications under European standards (EN 14351-1), withstanding extreme wind pressures and torrential rain without compromising indoor comfort or environmental integrity.
Minimalist glazing systems represent the state of the art in transparent building envelopes. By combining refined and elegant aesthetics with rigorous technical performance — in thermal, acoustic, and structural terms — they provide construction professionals with the tools required to create luminous, efficient, and deeply integrated spaces. More than simply windows and doors, they are transformative architectural elements that redefine the way contemporary spaces are inhabited and experienced.
