Aluminium Fire-Resistant Framing Systems: Safety and Performance in Construction

Fire-rated aluminium framing solutions ensuring compartmentation, safety, and compliance with European standards.

Aluminium fire-resistant framing systems represent a relevant technical solution within the scope of passive fire protection in buildings. These systems are designed to incorporate doors, fixed glazing, and fire-resistant partitions, helping to limit the spread of flames, heat, and hot gases between compartments for a specified period of time.

Unlike conventional framing, fire-rated aluminium systems are developed with specific multi-chamber profiles, often combined with internal insulating materials and intumescent seals that react when exposed to high temperatures. These components help maintain the system’s integrity and reduce heat transfer to the non-exposed side.

The performance of these systems is defined through standardized fire-resistance classifications obtained from laboratory testing. The most common classifications include EI30 and EI60, corresponding to the period during which the system simultaneously maintains:

  • Integrity (E) – preventing the passage of flames and hot gases;
  • Thermal insulation (I) – limiting the temperature rise on the non-exposed face.

Technical solutions can also be achieved with E classifications (flame containment) from 15 to 60 minutes, or EW classifications (flame containment and thermal radiation control) from 15 to 60 minutes.

Fire-resistant aluminium systems are typically combined with fire-rated laminated glass, which contains special interlayers capable of forming a thermal barrier when exposed to heat. This combination makes it possible to create safe glazed surfaces while maintaining transparency and visual continuity within interior spaces.

Among the main advantages of these solutions are:

  • Effective fire compartmentation, contributing to occupant safety;
  • Architectural integration, enabling fire-resistant glazed solutions;
  • Durability and low maintenance, inherent characteristics of aluminium;
  • Compatibility with other framing systems, ensuring aesthetic continuity.

The effectiveness of fire-resistant aluminium framing depends not only on the quality of the systems used but also on the technical rigor applied during manufacturing and on-site installation. Compliance with fire safety requirements and certified performance is only guaranteed when systems are produced and installed by companies operating in accordance with applicable European standards, namely EN 14351 (doors and windows) and EN 16034 (fire- and/or smoke-resistant doors, windows, and glazed elements).

Metallik is certified according to EN 14351 and EN 16034 standards, within the CE marking framework for doors, windows, and fire- and smoke-resistant systems. This certification ensures factory production control, system traceability, and strict compliance with the technical requirements defined in European standards, guaranteeing that installed products effectively match their tested and certified performance.

In this way, Metallik assumes full technical responsibility, from manufacturing to on-site installation, contributing to ensuring that fire-resistant framing solutions meet regulatory requirements and effectively perform their role in passive fire protection in buildings.
